IPL Cobalt-57 Flood Source
Cobalt-57 flood source is used to test the response uniformity of gamma cameras. This is a critical quality control procedure to ensure that the camera response is uniform over the total head area(s). The photon energies of cobalt-57 simulate technetium-99m.
Manufactured and 100% tested to have a coefficient of variation less than ±1.0% and integral uniformity of less than ±2.5%. SPECT imaging procedures require less than ±1% coefficient of variation. Cobalt-57 flood sources contain cobalt-57 uniformly dispersed in an epoxy medium and fully sealed in a high-integrity copolymeric encapsulation. Total activity is assayed, and a gamma spectrum is analyzed to verify radionuclidic purity at greater than 99%.
All solid cobalt-57 flood sources are supplied with a storage case with built-in casters that allow easy access without lifting. Lead shielding minimizes personnel exposure and reduces background radiation levels.
In addition, each Cobalt-57 flood source is supplied with:
- Uniformity test results
- Wipe test certification
- Handling and storage information
Flood sources are used with bar phantoms to check:
- Camera resolution
- Field size
- Linearity
- Collimator spatial resolution
